Our Mission Statement

The mission of the Olympia Westside Cooperative Preschool is to provide a safe, stimulating and enriching environment where children, with the cooperative support of parents and teachers, learn through play, arts and our community.

About Us

Our Education Philosophy

We strive to give a positive foundation for our students. Children are encouraged to explore, learn about themselves, develop self-confidence and practice cooperative social skills. We believe that children learn by doing, so we offer stimulating, challenging materials and activities that allow them to grow at their own pace. Ability levels, developmental stages and learning styles are accepted and incorporated into the design of appropriate activities.

Our highly qualified teachers nurture each child’s self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning. They keep abreast of the latest developments in Early Childhood Education and utilize anti-bias, anti-violence and a personal safety curriculum.

Our Program

Our goal is to provide a balanced preschool program for the whole child, allowing for physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and creative exploration and growth. During their preschool years, children may learn specific skills such as recognizing their names, using scissors or turning somersaults. These are important skills which encourage both adults and children. Our larger goals however, are harder for us to observe. We are watching for signs that children become comfortable with a variety of people, enjoy using their bodies, communicate their thoughts clearly, and approach life with joy and curiosity and confidence. These are attributes that will enrich their lives and assist them as lifelong learners.

To meet our larger goals, we pay close attention to how young children learn, think and feel. We continually develop our children’s program philosophy based on currently accepted theory in early childhood education. Some of this is derived from the position statement “Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Birth Through Age eight” published in 1986 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Each cooperative preschool teacher and parent also contribute their talents, interests and styles to enrich the basic philosophy.
